WHY DID I DO IT?

The Problem

My first teaching stint was in a classroom of 45 students in a low income schools in India, with barren walls, broken windows and congested seating. Only 2 students were at grade level in reading and math. A budget of only 15$ a month for the classroom was one among the many challenges to my desire to transform the learning space.

Walls to Teach

The financial constraints pushed my creativity with respect to reimagining the classroom. I focused on creating a lively and welcoming environment where every inch could contribute to student learning, and cater to different learning styles. The overhaul of systems, layouts and walls in the classroom led to the school’s first visual learning space. I firmly believe that children learn better in dynamic environments. An environment that engages students, also encourages them to learn from it. The following video will give you a glimpse of my efforts to try and bring one such classroom to life.

Outcomes

Two years later, 19 and 24 students out of 45 were at grade level in reading and math respectively. The transformation of the environment did not just maximize students’ academic achievements, but created a classroom culture that inspired students to be responsible for their own learning and progress. Most importantly, it made them believe in themselves.

Designing Learning Aids

A big focus for me as a teacher was to make instructions visible to students. Creating classroom posters for reference helped bring the instruction to life.
